sidewalk cafes, soccer games & shopping

August 8, 2012

Hello again from a very rainy and wet Durban! When it rains, it pours (literally, since Monday). However dreary the weeks might be, the weekends have been just beautiful!

We started at our new favorite spot to go for Saturday brunch, Peg. It's our unofficial goal to get to know everyone at the sidewalk cafe - surf/skate shop - furniture store hybrid. In addition to having the most delicious chicken burger and mango juice meal you can find anywhere, it's fun to watch the excited kids going in and later finding their big eyes peering over the counter as they watch the guys putting together their new skateboard. Skating is a big thing here, and I must admit that I'm tempted every time to purchase one myself. It would be fun to try, but a pain and a half to get back to the U.S. in four months!

Afterwards, we headed over to Westville Boys' High School to watch some soccer teams that our Durban friends coach. (Yes, it's called soccer here. Americans aren't the only ones!) It's hard to describe, but I always love doing "normal" things like that. I really think it's the only way to really get to know a place. It was kind of odd seeing all the boys walking around in their uniforms on a Saturday, but it did make for a pretty awesome student section. They even took their jackets off at the same time! Also, who needs cheerleaders when you've got a drumline and a stock of Zulu chants? (Let's get on this SB-L.)

To finish out the night, we hung out at our Norwegian friends' new house. It's a pretty nice three bedroom house, and they're renting it for $900 a month. Anyone want to move to South Africa with me?

On Sunday, Jill and I went to the market. I bought an elephant print wrap skirt, and we met the nicest lady named Toby (probably spelled Ntombe, but my Zulu isn't that good yet!). I bought earrings and a painting from her and she threw in a wood elephant keychain because "It's all about building friendship." What a wonderful way to look at life.

I've been staying inside because of the torrential downpours, but I think the clouds have finally parted, which is perfect because I don't have classes today! We get the day off for Women's Day...

... I think we need more national holidays in the U.S. Who's with me?

P.S. It was Mr. Ryan Pitt's birthday on August 7th. Did you stop in to say hi? If you didn't, you should do so now!
